It’s obvious they’re making some kind of commentary about how stories in real life just don’t have endings like that, in real life you may not ever get the answers you want and feel totally unsatisfied. “Inside” purposefully doesn’t give you any satisfaction, and you can make a compelling argument as to how this is a good choice. You feel sorry for him, but you at least got some answers and understand what happened. “Limbo” made you feel hollow because you understand what’s going on and you know you can’t help the little boy any more. But the story had a clear beginning, middle and end, and made you feel hollow in a different way. But that’s just it- it’s empty.Īnd while this was done on purpose, the game isn’t supposed to make you feel good, “Limbo” at least had some sort of ending. It’s beautiful, cinematic, breath taking and the fact that it isn’t complete, that you never get a clear answer as to what’s happening and the ending is empty, is really great. What I mean is, “Inside” has an amazing story. The jist of it is, I don’t care for “Inside’s” story. This is where people can get divided, and by people, I mean myself and the rest of the internet. “Inside” is also longer, but doesn’t have as much of a complete story. The puzzles are a little harder, the stakes a little greater- you have fewer chances just stand around and try to figure things out, you have to constantly be on the move lest you get caught. The new gameplay mechanics do make Inside feel like a more complicated game. Not even your submarine can save you from what lurks in the water. It gives the player a whole new world to explore, exploring decaying office spaces and crumbling towers and venturing into the unknown. The danger now comes from what’s in the water, rather just water itself being an obstacle, and it is utterly terrifying. “Inside’s” protagonist can actually swim, which adds a whole new layer of gameplay not seen in its predecessor. Water, even shallow pools, were a death sentence in “Limbo,” and lots of puzzles were based around trying to escape rooms filling with water or crossing lakes. “Inside” has a myriad of new gameplay mechanics not available to the child protagonist in “Limbo,” but most notably is his ability to swim. That brings up another big difference between “Limbo” and “Inside-” the inclusion of water. Giant factories that blast sound waves loud enough to tear the boy to shreds, lifts that can crush him, and insanely claustrophobic submarines. Instead of nature being your enemy as was prevalent in “Limbo,” in Inside it’s humans and machines. If the boy already knows, why should he have to relay it to anyone else? The cold, quiet offices and monolithic machines present a dystopian image that’s very unique to this game, feeling slightly 1984-ish, a little Brave New World-ish, but mostly all its own. I do love the world “Inside” creates, however, especially since we can only assume this is the society the boy lives in, very little information is given to the player just how this world works and why it’s this way. It’s less analogous to real life, which makes it feel even more other –worldly and less information is relayed to the player exactly where they are. It looks great, I just think “Limbo” looks a little better. There’s color, but not a ton (which makes our nameless protagonist’s red shirt stand out even more) and a very grimy, dirty feel to compliment the images of machinery and construction. “Inside” made a similar choice, but if “Limbo” is a film noir, “Inside” is a gritty zombie movie. I think I preferred the art in “Limbo” slightly more, just because it was so stylized it felt right out of a film noir. “Inside” was finally released in June of 2016 and has already received almost universal praise, with reviews generally ranging form 9.5 to 10.ĭoes “Inside” live up to “Limbo?” I think Inside has a lot in common with its predecessor and sometimes even surpasses it, but something as simple and beautiful as “Limbo” isn’t easily usurped.įans of “Limbo” will instantly recognize Jensen’s style all over “Inside.” We’ve got more colors than just black and white this time, but the minimalist style and 2D side scrolling remain intact. The game that came be to known as Inside was described by Jensen as a spiritual successor to “Limbo,” but “crazy, weird and 3D.” So when creator Arnt Jensen announced his second project at E3 2014, people were understandably hyped. Along with such giants as “Fez” and “Super Meat Boy,” “Limbo” holds a special place in the indie game category for its haunting atmosphere, simple controls and unique style, with dozens of accolades and over 3 million downloads to back it up. The 2011 puzzle/platformer “Limbo” is often cited as one of the quintessential independent games.

It was the low key "Your scientists were so preoccupied…" realization that drove the rest of my testing time with the Steam Deck. I'd say the two hours of battery at max brightness I could get in a game like Resi 2 is acceptable, but once I got over being impressed by how well the Deck could run the game, I realized it wasn't really how I wanted to experience it. Max brightness in the dark is eyeball-melting. At night, expect to be able to comfortably play the Steam Deck at ~50% brightness. Resident Evil 2 is a dark game and made for an extreme test case-generally I had no problem playing indoors in daylight and was even able to play the 512GB model, with its anti-glare coating, outdoors on a sunny day. It's vibrant for an IPS panel even when you're looking at it from off-axis, and about as good as I'd expect from a non-OLED panel. This isn't a knock against the Steam Deck's display, though, which I think is very good. There was a drawback though: I had to play at max brightness in the afternoon and crank up the in-game brightness setting to clearly see the screen in my brightly lit living room, so the game looked a tad washed out and the battery dropped from full to 44% in an hour. The superb Resident Evil 2 Remake is a notable exception: With a mix of low and mid settings I was able to run it at 60 fps, which was a genuine 'wow, this really works?' moment for such a relatively new and gorgeous game. GTA 5 could actually run at 60 fps with high settings and squeeze out two hours of battery life, but dropping to a 30 fps lock nearly doubled the battery estimate to 214 minutes. At an average 51 fps and 50% brightness, God of War would chew through the battery in 83 minutes, according to our calculations during testing with a 30 fps lock, that time jumped to around 200 minutes. Our other battery life tests had similar results. With the framerate capped at 60, Deathloop drained the battery from full to 20% in an hour and 10 minutes at about 60% brightness. Price: $399 (64GB) / $529 (256GB) / $649 (512GB)įor most new big budget games, locking the framerate to 30 fps is going to be mandatory for stable performance and practical battery life. The problem I've always had with Leathermans (please don't be mad at me, Leatherman guys) is that the miniature scissors and other doodads are never as good as the proper tools they replace. It was quite possibly designed by Leatherman guys at Valve, who decided that a handheld gaming PC would only work if it had a big screen, two big analog sticks, trackpads, and access to a proper Linux desktop underneath its friendly UI. The Steam Deck is a handheld gaming system a Leatherman guy would love. A Leatherman guy will give you one for Christmas the year you turn 16, and hand you their own, tiny knife blade extended, to slice through the gift wrap. With all those tools (and more!) a Leatherman is too big for a pocket, so they wear it-proudly-on a little holster clipped to their belt. Bottle opener? Some neutrons escape the fissionable material, while others interact with a nucleus without making it split. However, not every neutron produced by fission induces further fission. It is analogous to a dense shield or neutron reflector directing neutrons back to interact with more other nuclei and perpetuate the fission chain reaction. Explain that if the plastic box were not there, the uncontrolled chain reaction would likely not occur. Good videos of a ping-pong ball dropped into a room full of ping-pong balls and mousetraps elucidate this idea very well and can be easily found online. At this point, it is a good idea to show a quick video of a chain reaction model. The catalyst typically occurs in the form of a free neutron, projected directly at the nucleus of a high-mass atom. As a result, a physical catalyst is necessary to produce useful energy through nuclear fission. And although it is true that huge amounts of energy can be released, considerable effort is needed to do so in practice.Īn unstable atom will naturally decay, but it may take millions of years to do so. Given that it requires great energy separate two nucleons, it may come as a surprise to learn that splitting a nucleus can release vast potential energy. In simplest terms, nuclear fission is the splitting of an atomic bond. Through two distinct methods, humankind has discovered multiple ways of manipulating the atom to release its internal energy. Knowing that energy can be emitted in various forms of nuclear change, is it possible to create a nuclear reaction through our own intervention? The answer to this question is yes. This section delves into a less-natural process. Without human intervention, some nuclei will change composition in order to achieve a stable equilibrium. The previous section dealt with naturally occurring nuclear decay. How cold will it get in Austin?Īustin's temperatures at Camp Mabry, its main weather station, stayed in the low to mid-30s throughout Monday - and that frigidity will be the weather template for the next few days. Many of the districts said Monday that they planned to monitor weather conditions Tuesday before deciding to change Wednesday class schedules. By the afternoon, most school districts had announced that they would be closed Tuesday "out of an abundance of caution" about the threat of worsening weather.Ĭentral Texas school districts that planned to cancel all Tuesday classes and activities included Austin, Del Valle, Eanes, Georgetown, Hays, Lago Vista, Lake Travis, Leander, Manor, Pflugerville, Round Rock and Wimberley. On Monday, most Central Texas school districts canceled all of their after-school and extracurricular activities and events because of the inclement weather. Probably not if you go to school in the Austin metro area. It doesn't end there: Austin on Wednesday has a 90% to 100% chance of rain and thunderstorms, amid lingering bitter north winds of 10 to 15 mph. The rain and blustery winds will persist at night, even as temperatures sink to as low as freezing. Widespread rainfall amounts of as much as a quarter-inch are possible, with higher amounts from stronger isolated storms.įorecasters warned Monday that the "highest ice accumulations through Wednesday will be expected from the Hill Country into the Austin metro area, where a quarter- to a half-inch of ice will be possible."Īs travel conditions deteriorate from icing, "power lines and tree branches likely become weighted down by accumulating ice, resulting in power outages," the weather service said in a bulletin Monday.Īdding to Austin's wintry misery will be biting north winds of 10 to 15 mph that could include gusts as strong as 20 mph. The rest of the day has a 60% chance of morning showers, increasing in the afternoon. We should expect plenty of showers during this week's cold snap, according to the National Weather Service forecast.ĭrivers during Tuesday's morning commute need to be extra mindful of any icy patches left by Monday night's freezing temperatures. If Central Texas winters have taught us anything, it's that freezing cold is exponentially worse with precipitation because that means ice. That includes the communities of Austin, Round Rock, San Marcos, Lockhart, Bastrop, Burnet, Llano, Johnson City and Fredericksburg. One is a lead turn from Laurence Fishburne, who plays an undercover DEA proxy named Russell Stevens Jr. These dichotomies are perfectly dissected through the film’s central performances. And in its story of an undercover cop, it asks you to consider not the tragedy of the self he loses but the practicality of the self he finds. All the graphic violence feels like a thorough autopsy of decay at the dark center of American authority. It simply wonders which side will show cannier instincts for craven self-preservation. It could not give a shit about the spectacle of the battle between good and evil most people want to see. Working far outside comfortable boundaries of conventional morality, Deep Cover is the type of cop thriller where the codes with which an audience arrives are cast aside altogether. No cream, no delicate touch, just a blade doing its inevitable work without regard for the blood that may bubble beneath it. This film plays like a straight-edge blade slowly and sternly swiped over a deeply ugly, but immediately recognizable, American underbelly. If New Jack City was the D.A.R.E., 1992’s Deep Cover was the lacerating truth. Lastly, there’s the film’s closing note: “If we don’t confront the problem realistically without empty promises and platitudes …” If you find this even a slightly pragmatic consideration of drug blight, well, Nino Brown has a bridge off which to drop you. Further, New Jack City pretends the demise of Chris Rock’s Pookie, a doomed addict conscripted by these cops as an informant, represents the tragic death of a friend rather than failed means to carceral ends. Then there’s Judd Nelson as his adorkably hard partner, who might as well be playing a member of Color Me Badd in a movie that also features the group’s songs. This was Ice-T’s first film role, and the alleged concerns he had about whether playing a cop would corrupt the cred he’d created as a socially conscious rapper holds him back far too often. The necessary narrative counterpoint of the cops can’t possibly compare with the charisma that Wesley Snipes brings to the role, so the film leans on tired notions of lawman righteousness. Halfway through New Jack City, Nino basically becomes Tony Montana as a Bond villain, complete with a cane blade. But its flaws are more readily apparent now, namely in its ideological clash between blaxploitation roots, big-studio demands and, most of all, maintaining a straight-line posture of law and order as the heroes in the war on drugs. Taken on the terms of an electric, engaging action film, Mario Van Peebles’ film is fine. In its tale of drug kingpin Nino Brown’s futile quest for upwardly mobile legitimacy, New Jack City changed that for an entire age group … even as it spiffed the sort of story James Cagney had been telling 40 years earlier. So we knew about drugs, just not the drudgery of them as a business in the way the parents or guardians we knew had jobs. also ignited a generation’s curiosity to explore such mythic contraband. told us all about drugs and that they were bad. program?
